Cornelis Hulsman

Cornelis Hulsman (1955) is the founding principal of Center for Arab-West Understanding Learning Centre 

Story

Cornelis Hulsman (1955) is the founding principal of the CAWU-Learning Center. He is a Dutch national and sociologist who first came to Egypt in 1976. He studied between 1977 and 1984 development sociology at Leiden University. In this period he successfully completed a Field Laboratory Experience by working with multi-handicapped children and adults at Glassboro State College, New Jersey, 1980, for which he received the superior grade of A. This was recognized as a minor at Leiden University. Between 1986 and 1994 he occupied different leading positions in the Dutch emigration service. He left in 1994 with his wife and children for Egypt where he set up The Arab-West Report as a tool for dialogue between peoples of different religious and cultural backgrounds. He has been teaching Mass Communication at the American University in Cairo in 2000-2001. In 2009-2010 he was in the Netherlands to help transfer his family from Egypt to the Netherlands. He worked at this time as a teacher of philosophy at Stanislas College, Pijnacker, The Netherlands. He was responsible for the set-up of an internship program and has till date supervised over 350 student interns in Egypt. Cornelis Hulsman is one of the founders of the Centre for Arab- West Understanding in 2007 and discovered the 18-year Liberian student who could not read or write which prompted the start of this learning Centre. Since Cornelis Hulsman has been living in Cairo for so many years he is well connected and involved experts in education help in the set-up of this learning centre. His brother is the head of a Dutch school in the Netherlands. Cornelis Hulsman is currently serving as the principal of the CAWU Learning Centre and is supported by deputy-principal Rosy Sharma. Cornelis Hulsman is looking for his successor with the needed educational and organisational experience. Once such a person has been found he will limit himself to promotion and fundraising for the Learning Centre.
